The Summer School and the Boot Camp are organised by the Centre for Media Pluralism and Media Freedom (CMPF), co-funded by the European Union, at the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies of the European University Institute.
Building on its successful experience of previous years, this year's Summer School will offer the opportunity to 30 journalists and media practitioners, mainly from Europe, to learn about the latest academic research, policy, market and professional trends in the area as well as to share their experiences, ideas and points of view. The Summer School programme is structured around keynote presentations by distinguished experts and follow-up interactive small group discussions and Q&A sessions.
Topics include:
• Freedom of Expression, Pluralism and the Changing Media: Legal Perspectives
• Business Models for the Media and their Consumers
• Investigative Journalism - Risks and Opportunities
• New Media, New Challenges for Journalists
• The Ethics and Dangers of Being a Journalist
In addition, this year the CMPF will run a Boot Camp for Journalists offering practical training for around 30 journalists in the following areas:
• Legal rights and responsibilities of journalists; available sources and mechanisms of support
• Funding opportunities for journalists
• Techniques and skills of investigative journalism
• Online security for journalists and their sources
• Reporting Europe beyond Brussels
PARTICIPANTS:
The Summer School is open to journalists and other stakeholders in the media industry, e.g. publishers, network operators, content and service providers, citizens associations, and regulatory authorities, mainly from EU member states. The Boot Camp is open to journalists from all media platforms, mainly from EU member states.
For both events, we aim to have participants from a variety of countries and backgrounds. The selection of participants will be made by the CMPF based on the information provided in the application form. Applicants should indicate which of the events they are applying for (Summer School AND/OR Boot Camp) and whether their participation is conditional upon available scholarship.
Accepted participants will be expected to submit a 2-page case study on a best/worst practice of media freedom and pluralism protection (further instructions will be given to the accepted candidates together with their conditional offer of a place on the Summer School and/or the Boot Camp) by 18 April 2013. The acceptance to the Summer School is conditional upon submitting the case study.
All participants are expected to contribute actively to the roundtables and small group discussions, as well as to get acquainted with the materials distributed before their arrival to the Summer School AND/OR the Boot Camp.
COSTS:
Both the Summer School and the Boot Camp will offer a number of full scholarships (10) and partial scholarships (20).
The full scholarship will cover the tuition fee, lunches at the EUI canteen during the school days (no weekends), accommodation and travel expenses to/from Florence (reimbursed up to a ceiling of 400 Euro) for the duration of both events.
The partial scholarship will cover for both events the tuition fee and either travel expenses (reimbursed up to a ceiling of 400 Euro) or lunches at the EUI canteen during the school days (no weekends) and accommodation.
There will be also non-scholarship places available for self-funded candidates, who will be also subject of tuition fee (for the Summer School OR the Boot Camp the tuition fee is 500 Euro, for both events the tuition fee is 750 Euro).

OUTCOME:
Networking among participants; shared knowledge of common European journalistic professional rights and rules; strategies for the development of pluralism and freedom in the new media. A Certificate will be awarded to each participant who has successfully completed the training course.
